Most sunless tanning lotions use the bronzing agent dihydroxyacetone. This chemical ingredient reacts with dead skin to make the skin appear tanned. Sounds gross, but it works and feels just like any other lotion. With a lotion, the tan will last between 5-7 days.

Applying sunless tanning lotions evenly can be more complex than you might think. Getting the help of a professional at a sunless tanning salon will certainly make the task a lot easier and insure better results. But if you do it yourself, be sure to use a circular motion and/or vertical and horizontal strokes to decrease the chance of streaks in your tan.
