Experts are divided on whether there is such a thing as safe tanning. Some scientists argue that all sun exposure is potentially dangerous. Others claim that in moderation the sun can provide health benefits. Whatever the conclusion, follow these great tanning tips to help you you stay safe in the sun.

Summer is here again and it is time to shake of those winter blues. With the current doom and gloom in the economy, the sun is even more welcome than ever to lift everyone’s spirits.

Many people love a suntan. The safest tan of all is fake. There are some fantastic products available that produce a natural looking colour. They are simple to apply at home, or why not visit a salon to get a professional tan that you can top up yourself later. If you do use a fake tan, remember that SPF is still required in the sun.

If you have your heart set on the real thing, wise advice is always to tan with caution. In extreme cases, overexposure to the sun can cause skin cancer (melanoma). It is essential to ensure that you do not burn, so always use a high SPF. People with fair skins tend to burn more easily and should be extra careful.

Tanning beds have long been the subject of scare stories. Always use a reputable salon, and check that the equipment is up to date and has the relevant safety certification.

Liberal moisturising after sunbathing will help to prolong your tan. A wide range of aftersun products are available. Look out for those containing aloe vera as these have a wonderful refreshing and cooling effect on your skin.

Finally, look after the little people. Children should never use tanning beds and should always wear SPF outdoors. Hats are preferable on a sunny day too.
